SHABBAT DINNER
The table has been laid.
The nice plates with the roses and the brambles.
The good knives and forks.
Paper napkins because, what is this, a hotel?
Rock Surfers Theatre Company are stepping out of their Bondi home to present Shabbat Dinner, a unique performance experience created by multi-award-winning playwright Jessica Bellamy.
You’re invited to take a seat at the dining table, set with the Bellamy family’s finest glassware and a few lovingly mismatched spoons. The audience is invited to share a meal catered by the writer. As the evening unfolds, a community is built and then dismantled. The rituals, customs and habits of a Friday night are recreated in this new community. And then we will go about our lives once more.
Directed by Anthony Skuse (On the Shore of the Wide World, Punk Rock), Shabbat Dinner weaves together poetic storytelling, live music and playwright Jess’ best efforts at rekindling the taste of her Baba’s borscht.
After a smash season at Rock Surfers Theatre Company’s Bondi Feast festival in 2013, Shabbat Dinner is featured in The Sydney Morning Herald Spectrum Now festival, and will be performed in a disused space in The Rocks as part of The Rocks Pop-up.
Note, Shabbat Dinner is a show with a food component. Each guest will receive a drink on arrival, and traditional bread. Ticket price does not extend to a full course, or meal.
