The leylandii provides a cheap and fast growing hedge, but many people who plant them neither have the time nor inclination to follow through a regular clipping and training regime. Most sources report that mature trees grow at least 100 cm annually, and some claim that the ultimate height of the leylandii is yet to be discovered.... Leylandii like any hedge have to have the correct shape to stop the thinning bottom problem. The shape you need is a pyramid i.e. wider at the base than the top, if you keep leylandii trimmed to this shape and take the tops of they make excellent hedges, a real haven for nesting birds and a warm roost in the winter. The smaller shoots will still grow at the sides and and at the top but the main trunk will not. Trim as required. The tree will then "bush" up.
